Progress in biology and in vitro culture of hair follicle-derived melanocytes

Abstract:

Melanocytes are main cells in the vertebrate for staining skin and fair and locate in hair follicles and epidermis during embryonic development. They account for about 10﹪ of basal cell. There are a small number of melanocytes in hair follicle, choroid membranes and vasa aurisinternae. The decrease of cell number or dysfunction of melanocytes will results in pigment disorders. Research about melanocytes in epidermis of skin is abundant and the culture technique is mature. However, no theory is widely accepted for hair color fading. Melanocytes in hair follicles can produce melanin to protect the skin from ultraviolet light radiation, and home to the skin post-transplant. These evidences provide theoretical and experimental basis for the treatment of pigment disorder. We review the current progress and future direction about the biological characteristics and cultivation technique of hair follicle-derived melanocytes.
